I wish everyone understood this! Trump & MAGA admire Putin as a "strong leader", agree w/ his "anti-woke" ideology, and don't care what Russia does in Europe because they think it doesn't affect their interests. And Putin knows how to pander to them, has them wrapped around his little finger.

Trump’s bullying is damaging what had been one of the closest alliances in the world. Now 1 in 4 Canadians view the US as an enemy. Only 39% have a favorable view. Canadians are boycotting U.S. goods and canceling trips. Canada is considering canceling a $19 billion order for F-35s. wapo.st/4kOoIkK

A system that rewards companies for enabling authoritarianism will inevitably and consistently produce authoritarianism.

That’s not a political opinion — it’s a design specification.
Why Do Corporations Love Authoritarianism?
The least fun fact you're likely to read today: IBM helped the Nazis. Through its German subsidiary Dehomag, "Big Blue" custom-engineered Hollerith punch card machines specifically designed to meet the Third Reich's requirements for tracking, sorting, and processing human beings. To what end has Trump so provoked Canadians? It is hard to think of a foreign policy move more futile or self-defeating. Barring a military blitzkrieg to seize Ottawa, the chances of Canada becoming the 51st state are approximately zero. 90% of Canadians oppose becoming a U.S. state. wapo.st/4kOoIkK

Trump talks about Canada much the way that Putin talks about Ukraine — as a wayward province that isn’t really a country in its own right.

“If you look at a map, they drew an artificial line right through it, between Canada and the U.S.,” Trump said last week. “Makes no sense.”

A big win of the modern right has been to close the space in which nuance can even sit.

It's mostly obvious. But it's worth saying explicitly and this is an example. Under the heading of "DEI" they're not simply banning some new things from the last decade but also what is simply civil rights enforcement and even (as here) the mere recognition & expression of racial & ethnic identity.
The United States Military Academy has just eliminated all Cadet clubs and activities for POC. Most of these have existed for decades like the Society of Black Engineers. They were there when I was a Cadet in 1987. All of the religious ones remain. This isn’t DEI. It’s white Christian Nationalism.
