Another thing that's happened overnight is we've become fully aware of the number of fossil fuel lobbyists at these talks.

More than 1600 - 1 in every 25 participants, the highest concentration on record.

I don't know why it's a thing now but suspect it's partly due to poor response rates, so making it seem like a job or paid opportunity will entice people. Equally, given the poor training for researchers, particularly for online surveys, there may be no insights it's a problem. Either way, unethical

I imagine we'll be in for a big shock with that temperature shift, but it needs to happen. This mild weather is scary.

Agree. I've also seen researchers doing this with 'we're hiring.... ' adverts but they're actually trying to recruit participants.

The aforementioned sweatshirt looks like this, in case anyone else wants one. I specifically bought it so I could get into orca-related conversations with passers by, but I completely blew that opportunity today.

Not quite the same but this uncritical prescriptiveness reminds me of back when ethics committees/funders pivoted from not caring about language barriers in research to insisting all instructions, forms etc MUST be translated into multiple languages. Even if your participants didn't speak them.

I don't object to sharing ideas in diverse ways to suit different needs (helping one another where there are barriers to engagement). But I share your concern around the prescriptiveness of this and I don't believe the public must all want or need to know about methods in this top down manner.

Not sure if it's relevant to your piece, but worth noting that given the volume of redundancies in universities, this years graduates may well be competing for new jobs against their professors. It's a bleak landscape.

converted to our context: before sending out a review of an abuser's work, you should probably zoom with the people he abused, explaining why his work is so important to laud and why their careers and dignity can be overridden

There ARE major issues with unis in terms of funding, precarity, staff and student welfare, and particular areas being decimated. Raising awareness on that is vital, but remains a challenge when its competing with stronger narratives of feckless students, revolutionary lecturers and wasteful degrees

There was also a big trend back then for apps on relationships, confidence, dating tips and ending loneliness to be fronted by clinicians. The commercialised pairing of medics and tech is a really interesting one to unpick, not just in terms of evidence and what they're promoting, but ethics also.
