An excellent survey of the OSCE on the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act - and why both still matter
Having served in the UK Delegation to the OSCE just as Putin came to power & began to undermine the organisation, I'm under no illusions about its weaknesses. But the Helsinki principles from which the OSCE grew are still a good starting point for managing an adversarial relationship with Russia.
The 1975 Helsinki Final Act was one of the most important products of the period of détente between the West & the Soviet bloc in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Are it and the #OSCE that grew out of it still relevant in 2025?
