Here's an animated map showing the spread of the PY.1 variant. The first sample was reported in Ontario, Canada in early March.

It was soon reported across North America and Europe and then spread rapidly around the globe. It has been particularly successful in India.

The new BA.3 is also looking quite trim and fit these days! Like several late-XBB variants, it has shorn itself of ORF7ab & ORF8 with a deletion of over 800 nucleotides. It appears to be the same deletion that GW.5.1.1 (an XBB) had.

The next SARS-CoV-2 variant up is JN.1, a BA.2.86 add on, which differs considerably cf HV.1 (current US lead), EF.5.1, XBB.1.5 (booster target). It's likely to further challenge our immune response (spike mutation map below) and main results from Yunlong Cao's lab
