To put it another way, *capital* is perfectly capable of organizing decarbonization. The problem is *capital-owners*, who are political actors and not just the embodiments of the accumulation process. Elon Musk is symptomatic here.

We don't but equally if we had countries competing to host the crack burger design teams then it would be surprising if no companies offered crack burgers.

If Meta could optimise you clicking ads by sandwiching them between videos of refugees playing with labradors that is what they would do

I really don't want to carry water for these companies but I think it would be very difficult to design any system to show people more of what they consume automatically without that meaning people watch more and more stuff that pisses them off.

Also underrated that he sacked a bunch of people, the site still worked, and in the process upended how a lot of his "peers" thought about their own workforces.

Every time I've had cause to come across people in the BBC talking about an area that I know about, except it has to be said local journalists talking about their own county or whatever, I've been vaguely horrified.

I think the problem, and I am someone who supports these changes, is that they do occur in a broader context and Britain doesn't have the welfare state for the out-of-work that will make it OK for those people who pay the price for the change.

In part, but (and I say this knowing more about the Middle East than economics) the logic changed so that by the end the entire make-or-break was "how does this affect our dollar balances" in which situation India and most of Africa becomes a millstone around the neck but the Gulf a jewel.

Reminds me of a great quote from one of the early American diplomats to the House of Saud: The problem with the Brits is they want to rule the world, we're content just to own it

Like I don't really care how it happens but this country won't be fixed until "this house I own is worth a stupid amount" stops being an entirely positive situation for someone to be in.

Has to be said that a wealth tax would make a lot of the assets that contribute to that (housing!) less attractive and probably help solve that problem.

Well made worse by the fact he also had to hide them from his friend whose hilarious story is the night where he got stabbed, then as he was walking home to safety got stabbed again in an entirely separate incident.

Flip side too, I think a lot of people (fairly, tbh) have a hard time getting that the British state doesn't really know where people live but can quite easily know what time you bought a McDonald's.

Best mate is South African and his American in laws went to visit his family there and he had to straddle a very fine line of "here is advice so you don't get murdered" but also "please don't be too scared and freak out when I have to move here with your daughter and grandson in two years"
