Why would they respond warmly to a win for a politician whose values are mostly diametrically opposed to their own?

This isn't a comms issue. Labour is not a left party pretending to be right-wing for the cameras. They are making hard right statements and policies because they believe in them.

Yeah, it has that slightly manipulative undertone, for sure. A connotative rather than a semantic distinction
