in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

It's been some time since I've been on here so it's about time I share some updates of these past 6 months!

In October, I went to the AOS conference in Colorado. It was an incredible experience. I presented my undergraduate research and learned a lot which I've applied towards my current research.

As I've been away from Bluesky, I've realized I've never shared my exciting news...

I'm pursuing a MS at the University of Maine!

I'm currently studying birds as ecological indicators for different forest management activities in Maine.

On my second to last day of work in Florida and searching for this nest specifically for almost a week...I finally found it today! My first Florida Grasshopper Sparrow nest I found on my own.
Good luck little ones. I'll be rooting for this nest a thousand miles away.

Excited to share I will be at #AOS24! This is the first science conference I have ever been to, aside from one day events, and I'm presenting a poster! I am super excited to get to learn more, meet new people, and do some birding in Colorado.

Accidentally found my first Common Nighthawk nest today! Can you spot the eggs and the parent?

I have some exciting news to share in these upcoming weeks. I'm leaving Florida early to pursue an incredible opportunity back in Maine!
While I've enjoyed the birds of Florida, I am excited to get to work with the forests and songbirds of the northeast again.

As Bluesky doesn't yet support video, I had to post this to Twitter.
Last night, I had the opportunity to participate in a Florida Bonneted Bat emergence survey and got a video of them emerging from their roost.

Checked in on a Florida Grasshopper Sparrow nest and had four little faces looks right back up to me!

These four nestlings are at least 7 days old, meaning they may fledge any day now. They grow quite fast!

For the first time, my research got accepted for a poster presentation at a conference and I'm so excited but also incredibly nervous. I'm hoping I can gather the funds and time off to go!

A nervous, young raccoon found their way into the office dumpster the other day. We provided a rake to help them get out and even after making their way out, they were too scared to jump down! They eventually climbed down and waddled away.

The Florida dry prairie isn't looking very dry...

The combination of El Niño and a storm last night left what should be a dry, sandy ground flooded. From the sounds of it, it's been unusual weather this year.

Excited to finally share where I will be spending my spring and summer field season...
I'm a Seasonal Research Technician at Archbold Biological Station assisting in Florida Grasshopper Sparrow monitoring and conservation as a part of their Conservation of Military Landscapes project!

Too excited to not share my first lifer of the year and #402: Tundra Swan!

I stopped by Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck NWR where there is a wintering colony. I spotted over 50 swans during my morning there!

A fun thing I have been getting into with #bioacoustics is seeing which species we don't have any or few recordings or information in. When I went to Midway Atoll, I discovered an amazing opportunity. Macaulay Library has a list of target species and Midway was the perfect place to help out with it!
Target species
Updated December 2023 Thanks to eBirders from around the world, the Macaulay Library now has media for more than 10,745 species of birds—that’s 99% of the living species on Earth! These rec

This article is really cool! I only first learned about wing flashing when I saw a Northern Mockingbird doing it last summer.
🪶 How did birds evolve wings? A partial wing is of no use for flying, but natural selection can't plan ahead and allow a species to gradually evolve toward wings that are actually useful for flying. 1/n
