Were I in a govt that really cared about kids, I’d be banning new coal and gas mines with rather more fervour than the current ban on social media.

Probably wouldn’t get the same boasting front pages in the Herald Sun and Daily Telegraph though…
The November monthly temperatures have been released and 2025 looks set to be the 2nd hottest year on record.

Remember when warming apparently stopped in 1997?

That is more than 0.5C ago.

Australia's ruling parties, Labor and the Liberal-Nationals Coalition, are comfortable for children to be harmed, whether by incarceration, bombing, shooting, starvation or destroying the liveable climate

But social media ban on under-16s warrants lighting up Sydney Harbour bridge in celebration

Since the social media ban started some young teens in my neighbourhood have started a club, well it's really more a business than a club, offering to babysit younger children. You can only reach them on a landline and one of them has diabetes. Heartwarming.

Incredible the difference I'm observing mere hours after the child social media ban. Four boys on my street started a journey from their treehouse to find the body of a missing kid in the wilderness. Along the way, they're learning about themselves, & the meaning of friendship. Great to see

Conversation in my house this morning:
Me: Kris is coming to fix the bathroom.
Child: Who's Kris.
Me: He's a man who fixes things.
Child: Is he the one who pulled all the bras out of the wall?
Me: No.

Let me make this conversation make sense for you...

A lack of government funding isn't an excuse to take fossil fuel sponsorship. You wouldn't:
- rob a train
- defraud pensioners
- advertise asbestos

Fossil fuels will kill everything we love unless we kick them out of society.

But we CAN have nice things without them.

A gay man from a country town once showed me the newspaper column of mine he'd kept in his wallet since (pre-socials) school; it said he was not alone & would find his people. Social media can be a lifeline for kids who're bullied, live in abusive home, or whose hobbies/interests are anti-anxiety.

"Belinda Noble, founder of Comms Declare, said: “This is climate obstruction dressed up as education. We wouldn’t let big tobacco sponsor teaching materials – fossil fuel companies shouldn’t shape how kids learn about the climate.”

Quite right. Should be illegal

Fossil fuel sponsored education programs distract from & obscure harms caused by fossil fuels.

These companies aim to delay the energy transition, harming the kids they claim to help.

It should be illegal.

As a Freo Dockers supporter and member, I'm really hoping that they make the smart choice to get rid of Woodside once their contract is up. I'll be as vocal as I was last time they were reviewing it.
Woodside are expanding fossil fuels during the climate crisis. They have chosen to be the bad guys. We shouldn't let them launder their reputations through our community institutions.

Student & staff members of @stopwoodsidemonash campaigned fearlessly against Woodside's partnership at Monash Uni.

Yes! That social license they have isn’t deserved. In my town, their name is emblazoned on all the little outfits worn by Nippers (kids learning surf lifesaving) every Sunday morning down at the beach. Certain dark irony there 😒
