My best friend at SU goes to Le Moyne (the SUMB allows people from all of the other area colleges to march with us.) While waiting to go to a game (specifically the 2023 SU/Pitt Yankee Stadium), we jokingly said "You just got Le Moyne'd."

A blue Chevy Corsica, a ubiquitous sedan in the early 1990s but now largely forgotten. If you ever rented a car between the years 1987 and 1995, chances are it was a Corsica. Samantha rented a Corsica, only once, at PDX. She drove the four hours to Gold Hill to see at long last the Oregon Vortex. For most people the Oregon Vortex was a cheesy roadside attraction, a place where balls roll uphill and you know it’s contrived but you’re delighted in the wonders of the illusion. For Samantha, though, the Oregon Vortex was a pilgrimage. It was proof. Proof that what she witnessed in the woods when she ran away from home those many years ago was real. How when she lay in the forest on a bed of moss, the ferns surrounding her like pinnated green curtains, she took off her ring and dropped it, and the ring fell up.

A cartoonish drawing of a white convertible, before it was totalled later the same day. The driver was fiddling with his phone. Not even texting, just calling up a Spotify playlist. He ran a red light and t-boned a Ford. It took a while for the EMTs to get him out of the car, but he was fine. He’ll hurt like hell tomorrow, but no big deal. The EMTs took the old man driving the Ford off in their ambulance. Sometimes the guy in the convertible wonders how the other driver is doing. But not often.

An illustration of the Soviet Buran, a spaceplane modeled after NASA’s space shuttle. The Buran is pictured here prepared for takeoff, attached to the enormous Energia rocket. In 1988 the Buran completed its one and only ever orbital flight, an uncrewed one at that. Engineers discovered that the orbiter lost eight of its tens of thousands of thermal tiles during the mission, yet, unaccountably, the Buran weighed approximately 57 grams more upon its return from space. The Buran program was canceled in 1993 after the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the orbiter itself was accidentally destroyed in 2002 when its hangar at the Baikonur Cosmodrome collapsed. By that point, though nobody was measuring it, the Buran had gained another 609 grams. Now it weighs nothing.

A Grumman X-29 jet, an experimental U.S. Air Force aircraft with forward-sweeping wings and smaller canard forewings. According to public records, only two X-29s were built, the first flying in 1984. After determining that the novel design was inherently unstable, the Air Force retired both X-29s in 1991. One of the grounded X-29s is on display at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the other at Edwards Air Force Base. Evelyn has read rumors in obscure IRC channels and unlisted Gopher sites that Grumman built a third X-29, and that the aircraft is still in use. The most substantive of these rumors comes from an anonymous source claiming to be a former pilot of the X-29. According to this source, the Air Force discovered that X-29 pilots underwent extreme elongation of the human body in flight, upwards of 11 inches. Furthermore, this dilation persisted for days after the mission was over. The source maintains that the USAF continues to subject a secret cohort of pilots to X-29 flights in an attempt to create inhuman airmen, their arms and legs stretched horrifically thin in unnerving parodies of Greek statuary.

On this day in 1935, the DC-3 first took flight. From ushering in passenger air travel to a leading role in WWII to remaining a workhorse in the world’s most inhospitable climates 90 years later, the DC-3 continues to be a true aviation icon.
A DC-3 passenger aircraft above modern day New York City “That’s all brother,” the C-47A (DC-3 variant) that led the allied invasion of Normandy during WWII. A White Desert Basler BT-67 (upconverted DC-3). These aircraft operate in the Artic and Antarctic areas carrying passengers and cargo.
