An Apparition. Slide from my collection, 1975.
Color image of a shorthaired white cat sitting in a window, peering placidly from between lace curtains. The window is bright with sunlight, making the curtains glow but backlighting the cat so that its face is shadowy and mysterious. This would have been a lovely composition on its own but accentuating the otherworldliness of the scene is a houseplant with long, seaweed-like leaves that undulate across the foreground, one of them arching up to frame the cat perfectly.

Matching Tattoos 🏳️‍⚧️

Digital Comic of my characters Azalea and Santiago. The first panel shows both of them as pre-transition teenagers, looking up in awe at a sign that reads "Promoción: Matching Tattoos 2x1. ₡15000". Azalea is tall white teen girl with a light sandy skintone and shoulder-length brown hair, she wears a bright green polo shirt with a striped long sleeve shirt underneath, and grey baggy pants. Santiago is a short Black teen boy with a caramel brown skintone, brown hair styled in Bantu knots, and he wears a purple T-shirt with a short open denim vest over it, white denim shorts, reddish pink cheetah print leggins and white fur boots. Next panel shows their wrists together, now with matching heart tattoos. The last panel shows both of them, now post-transition adults, sitting in a cushiony purple restaurant booth, showing off their tattoos to someone off-screen, who reaches to hold Azalea's hand. Azalea has a beaming smile, and comments "One tattoo is enough for me!", Santiago points and says "We got them retouched a few years ago". Azalea's hair is now longer and dyed green, and she wears an off-white T-shirt with a bright orange long sleeve top underneath, and baggy brown cargo pants. Santiago's hair is now styled in a high flat-top afro with a fade, he wears dark makeup, hoop earrings and a small heart piercing, rings in each finger and long acrylic nails. He wears a dark and glittery sheer long sleeve top with a cut-out, showing a large beetle tattoo on his chest, and a black top.

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age 💙

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

The image shows fourty-four annular (ring-shaped) translucent turquoise blue glass beads strung on a modern circular thread and displayed against a black background. The glass beads were found in 1885 when a farmer ploughed up a cremation urn at Kongehøj in Denmark. The urn broke and was found to contain burnt bones, the 44 blue glass beads and two gold spiral rings. Recent analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), indicating far-reaching trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

Tumblr user willgrahamscock posts an image of a sad little animal, crying from having tomatoes thrown at it, with the title "what I think will happen if I message my mutuals". The user fleaful responds with a 4 panel comic, showing the beforementioned creature being washed, dried, and comforted. They add "the image was making me sad so I drew the little guy being taken care of". The user r4bbitmorgue then responds with a picture of the little guy, but in colour and more fluffy, a glowing heart on it's chest and it's eyes full of love. Alongside the quote "To be loved is to be changed".

Andrew Kadel @DrewKadel@social.coop My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen. Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.
