community support and solidarity is more important than ever, and it can feel overwhelming to know what to do. don’t let it immobilize you. there are essential things each of us can do that can have tangible impacts and are valuable no matter the scope.

1. Follow their lead. Listen to whatever someone is willing to share. There are things that might happen that make you upset or angry on their behalf. Ask what they need and how they want you to give support. From the outside, you can’t know all the dynamics and possible consequences at play. 2. Keep in communication. Write letters, arrange calls, find out if the facility they’re in still allows in-person visits. Show up throughout their trial and to any hearings. Each facility arranges communication differently, so find out what procedures you need to follow to get your message through. Phone calls cost money, so getting money onto their account can help them talk to more people. 3. Show the jail or prison that people are paying attention. If you suddenly lose contact or can’t find information on the person you know, MAKE A RUCKUS. If you learn of targeted treatment or denied medical care, call and ask why. Make sure their legal support is aware of the situation and find out what others have done in this situation. Phone storms, public demonstrations, and other methods of pressure can force a carceral location to respond. 4. Find legal support options and establish contact. Utilize your internet connection, email, and phone access. Many organizations at the city and state level offer different supports for people during their trial, incarceration, and following their release. Research who might be able to help the person you know and follow their process of getting support to the person imprisoned.

Some things you can do to support someone incarcerated. This info was gathered from attending a Rattling the Cages video conference and is in no way exhaustive. Rattling the Cages is great and we recommend checking them out, as well as seeking out and supporting your local prisoner support projects!

If someone you know has been arrested, there ARE things you can do to help. Outside support can make all the difference during someone’s time behind bars.
