I am all for protecting our water from too much salt but why do so many places over salt in the first place? A little extra shovelling goes a long way. I barely have used a bag of salt this winter on my shared driveway. I put more effort into shovelling frequently and strength.

This is why I often say the one in the larger vehicle has greater responsibility, but I will also say badly designed and intentionally unfriendly pedestrian areas are more responsible for injuries and deaths like these.

I hade a good time to check out Hanover, Ontario by bike. It wasn't bad coming from a nearby AirBnB. I didn't feel too unsafe with the wide shoulders, the recreational trails, and what I thought looked like bike lanes but nothing confirmed that.

A lot needs to be done to make biking feel safer.

I rented an e-bike when I took out a trip to Hamilton. The e-bike did wonders on those side streets in between the level streets that were parallel with coast.
