Many American engineers responded to my multi-stage ped crossing video saying that they can't do Dutch-style ped green waves with American equipment.

But the City of Madison, WI keeps proving them all wrong. Here's @jerryschippa.bsky.social showing one off:

When you post residential speed limits on roads that look like highways, you cannot act surprised when society normalizes speeding.

Same goes for putting stop signs at every corner regardless of sightlines.

If it feels unreasonable to obey a law, it will always become normalized to break that law.

In Ottawa when a road is reconstructed it's brought up to the current standards. That usually means that cycle tracks get added, as is currently happening on Greenfield Avenue:

This "priority removal section" for the bike lane on Bloor W demonstrates that Ford and Sarkaria were never serious about finding parallel secondary routes. Where is the parallel route here? They don't care. www.thestar.com/news/gta/the...

100% the density around higher order transit locations needs to massively increase density. Back in the day I hated Ron Moeser because he blocked every attempt to increase density near rouge hill.

I'm not anti-Go by the way, I'm just saying many people do not use it due to barriers

And if a fourplex burns down and gets replaced with a one unit mansion, no public meeting needed. Classism that calls itself “local democracy”.

This is an important point that gets overlooked too often. These 'public meetings' aren't needed for every type of housing - they are mostly only required when adding units. A multiplex is almost always going to offer more affordability - which we say we want more of - but do we really?

The United States is a nation beyond the rule of law.
People are being kidnapped on the streets by men in masks.
They are being disappeared and deported to foreign concentration camps.

The "right" to speed is so engrained that we insist drivers must be given all sorts of additional cues that they may in fact get ticketed for going over the speed limit. www.thestar.com/news/gta/the...

This is not a good situation. We shouldn't have politicians pressuring public agencies into giving a foreign company contracts if they are not competitive! These are set to be some of the most expensive subway trains ever, and its a huge order!

Context: Metrolinx fired the European consortium they hired to reinvent the GO rail system largely because GO was unwilling to cooperate about changing the current archaic operating practices.
That the response to the bad news about GO included "we're addicted to cars" and "the politicians" which makes me sad, these things have *nothing* to do with it

Cool video for the traffic nerds from @ontariotrafficman.bsky.social

Amazing to see how many different light configs there are here. If no waiting vehicles/peds, a phase will be skipped.

Bonus phases too, e.g. if no waiting peds then turning cars may get green.

A depressing but unsurprising story of the DB-Metrolinx divorce

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if Canadian politicians want to improve in the fields where we aren't a frontrunner (e.g. transit ), they need to get rid of the current class of managers and their backward-looking culture

ICYMI: Several well-placed sources, leaked documents and recordings of internal town halls detail how a bitter, years-long falling out with a European partner has led Metrolinx to scale back its ambitious GO Expansion plan.

Last comment: The fact that Jonathan English who has now written up *two* coherent regional rail plans (arguably two more than Metrolinx) and released them to the public isn't running Metrolinx is crazy. I think that neither feature "GO" branding is interesting.
