the closest I came to witnessing any of this was attending e3 2010 after a steady media diet of Ziff Davis/1UP magazines, websites, and podcasts that kicked off in earnest in 2004 at their DigitalLife convention in New York.
i love hearing about the wild days of games journalism in the 2000s when print was still around and people were just going to crazy parties with crash bandicoot and master chief in SF all the time. i came in at the end and the most i got was flown to vegas once to play the terrible saints row reboot
