❗New Entry❗

Reparative citizenship may aim to right past wrongs, but @peterspiro.bsky.social argues it actually weakens the foundational concept of citizenship itself 🛂⚖️

It is unsentimental, instrumental, detached from the community and erodes civic ties 🧑‍🤝‍🧑🚫

I don’t doubt that some of my co-religionists have experienced antisemitism. Sometimes aggressively so.

But it’s use as a cudgel to destroy institutions essential to our country has absolutely nothing to do with that.

Reparations aren’t just about citizenship, what if refusal is the remedy?

Shame on the handful of people who wore their expensive winter gear to city hall yesterday to protest the establishment of overflow refugee shelters in their communities.

More than 3,000 people are homeless in Ottawa.

Ottawa’s homeless population has more than doubled since 2021
There are almost 3,000 people in Ottawa experiencing homelessness, according to new data released by the city. On Oct. 23 dozens of volunteers canvassed the municipality for the Point-in-Time (PiT) count, a snapshot of the number of people living without a home. It is a national effort that helps governments and agencies understand the number […]

I’m what I hope is at least half way through my first Covid infection - and I have to say, everything about this experience makes me confused about why we have decided to let it run rampant when we could … not.

The City of Ottawa has a gorgeous history of welcoming those fleeing oppression - and we can and should draw on that history to continue to do so.
Everyone deserves a chance for a good life. Ottawa has a history of welcoming refugees and newcomers.

Let’s draw on that compassionate tradition and fight the racism and disinformation circulating right now.

Housing is a human right. Refugees are welcome here.

I know we can do better, Ottawa.

Thank you to the *16* people who responded so thoughtfully to my defence of mandatory citizenship oaths. Below is my attempt at a response! Short version: citizenship oaths build trust and formalize new political affiliations in ways that newcomers find meaningful.

Christine Hobden argues persuasively that mandatory oaths are especially problematic in states filled with xenophobia directed against migrants in particular - South Africa is her test case:

@ashwinivasantha.bsky.social offers a decisive, and possibly determinative "no" to the question, "should new citizens have to pledge allegiance to their new state in order to become citizens?"

I'll be participating in the connected webinar on October 10 at 12:30 EST. My take: laws around what should and shouldn't be protected/prohibited speech are a matter of domestic, multicultural, concern - they shouldn't be governed by what foreign governments will say.
