After a break from it for a few years, it’s good (& difficult!) to be back to discussing Citizenship in a Globalised World & bringing the theory into contact with new questions - and excellent to be in the Eastern Cape & amongst philosophers again! 🤓📖

Thank you to the *16* people who responded so thoughtfully to my defence of mandatory citizenship oaths. Below is my attempt at a response! Short version: citizenship oaths build trust and formalize new political affiliations in ways that newcomers find meaningful.

Another great contribution to the GlobalCit forum on mandatory citizenship oaths (with kickoff contribution by @pattitlenard.bsky.social).

I am new on here & still finding my feet but pleased to have my first mention! - and to have participated in this great forum by GlobalCit.

Thanks to @pattitlenard.bsky.social for the excellent kick off contribution & GlobalCit for facilitating this innovative space of debate & knowledge creation.
Christine Hobden argues persuasively that mandatory oaths are especially problematic in states filled with xenophobia directed against migrants in particular - South Africa is her test case:

No one thinks mandatory citizenship oaths are a good idea? No one at all?

Here's the fantastic @deeesharp.bsky.social arguing against them (and me), at the EUI's Global Citizenship Observatory:
