There is a new study out in Nature about the Atlantic overturning circulation. I will be curious to see the media reporting on this. If you wonder why, read my blog article on it! 🌊

There is evidence that technologies like search engines and GPS maps can alter our ability to learn and remember. Nature reports how scientists are now working out what AI might do to our memories. 🧪

Musk, Vance & Trump all misrepresent democracy.

When they say “democracy”, they mean a free-for-all with no rule of law, where the winner takes all.

When Europe says “democracy”, we mean proportional representation, collaborative politics, citizen rights, and agreed guide rails guaranteed by law.

Brave New World.
The US sliding down into an authoritarian oligarchy.
I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky
Just received an email saying that it's not advisable to include the following words in future applications for research funding to the US DOT. Here we are.

To build a world-leading science base is hard and takes a lot of time.
To destroy it is easy, quick & nasty.
Just defund, censor & sack the scientists.

This is dangerously irresponsible on every level. Indiscriminately slashing this funding will cripple lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.
NIH cuts billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately
The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease.

Last week members of the new #DOGE team have aggressively threatened all agencies supporting science and research in the #USA, including #NOAA. Financial fanaticism must never harm the public good. My solidarity to all colleagues. www.theverge.com/news/607224/...

If DOGE really wants to save taxpayers money, they would deal with climate change because that shit’s gonna cost us trillions of dollars.

At other branches of NOAA, international contact is facing heavy scrutiny, raising questions about how easily scientists could carry out work to monitor weather and atmospheric conditions.
