What I’m reading.

Fatal Purity, Robespierre and the French Revolution
By Ruth Scurr.

Just started reading. Finding I don’t care much about Robbie’s early childhood. So he loved birds. Wealth & class in his native Arras may turnout to have been significant. We’ll see …

Suppose there was a virus before COVID-19, much milder in effect such that you might never know you had caught it. Say the only lasting consequence in some is an alteration in temperament.

I am wondering if such an epidemic broke out in 2015 or thereabouts. It seems many people changed around then.

If, at every moment of decision, individuals followed conscience, & if one person failed the next one downstream stood firm, etc., how would the past & future 20 yrs be different?

Moral failure is compounding so that, at some point, the last honest men are like twigs in an avalanche.

What I am reading.

Who Goes Nazi?
Dorothy Thompson, Harpers Magazine, 1941

Essay about who’d side w/ Hitler’s (pre-holocaust) Nazis if they became dominant in US politics. She defines character types most likely.

Don’t know why Sen. Graham suddenly came to my mind.

It feels like the twilight of democracy.

When we look back on it we’ll say the thing was too ambitious, that it required people to be better than we naturally are.

What I am rereading. Berlin, Anthony Beevor.

What is striking is similarity w/ today. Same hubris, same chauvinism, mass murder for pride or revenge, overturning of moral logic, scarcity of moral courage.

The powerful cannot imagine fates change and you might become the victim.

Continuing to learn how GenAI helps authors.
Right now trying Google NotebookLM

The studio generates a podcast about yr manuscript. It is good. Some over interpretation, but seems not far off what moderately perceptive humans can achieve.

Just realised BSky platform will not accept video longer than 1 min. That rules out almost everything useful.

The Substance is a cautionary tale of what can happen when your movie’s over & there’s lots of latex left over.

The best parts are easily overlooked. Elizabeth preparing for a date in a high point. The encounter in the cafe is also poignant.

Worth screening as a Barbie double-bill

Western democracy in late 20th/early 21st century is moulded by bold figures. In earlier eras they would have built armies and crowned themselves. The last of the breed was probably Napoleon (excl. 1930s).

Watching Black Doves on Netflix
Halfway through episode 1.

Wonder whether it’s intended to be clumsy, violent, unoriginal, but kind of charming, like Tarantino’s Kill Bill.

So far, it isn’t pulling it off.

Health insurance companies want to exclude anaesthesia from coverage.

Healthcare may be the issue that finally persuades Americans they don’t need to accept their present economic model.
axios.com Axios @axios.com · Dec 9
A now-reversed Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield policy that would have created a time limit for coverage of anesthesia has led to a Democratic bill that would prevent such a cap in the future.
Health care uproar sparks new legislation in Congress
The bill to prohibit time limits on anesthesia coverage is in response to an Anthem policy that ignited an firestorm.

Studying effective use of AI in supporting authors.

Obviously *you* conceive your ideas & give them creative expression.

Sometimes it is helpful to have someone else read long sections & give literary feedback. It’s why you married him/her or stockpile chewy snacks.

I use Word. Also ChatGPT & Claude for proofreading. Polly for long, natural-ish audio readings. You can listen for 1hr whilst walking, forgetting you wrote it & try to experience as a reader.

It’s a trade-off btw usefulness & potential IP theft, but slight anxiety remains.

Concha Buika and Javier Limon.

I love the dramatic musical interpretation, Buika is totally possessed, and Limon enchanted.

If you return I would dress you in gold, my saint
I would hush everything so you’d hear my desperate song”
