Episodes like this make me realize that I have a really restrictive view of what Star Trek should be: a group of people solving starship problems together. I get frustrated when it doesn’t follow that formula and that’s unfair.

That manifested charmingly in Ake’s refusal to wear shoes—a first for a Star Trek captain? I love that she’s confidently herself, exudes authority despite her idiosyncrasies, and makes no apologies for them.
Isn’t Betazed super out there for Starfleet’s home base?

It was interesting to see the tensions between the War College and Starfleet Academy. It seems the former has gotten more powerful and influential in the wake of the Burn. Star Trek has always played with that balance between discovery and militarism.

This episode mostly ditched the ensemble to focus on a small-scale love story, which isn’t my preference but I rolled with it. The romance was charming and I loved that a pivotal moment involved a whale (shout-out to the Voyage Home).

It’s a subtle thing, but I appreciate how this show experiments in small ways, from ending the premiere with “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” to the on-screen title “FIRST SEMESTER” in this episode. These small touches feel distinctive amongst the other Treks.

Alright, Norm Nation, a close, trusted friend asked if I could help a family she has been supporting who has not only been in hiding but the father also needs cancer surgery. They are hoping to raise $10k-ish for healthcare, living expenses, and rent. I sent $500, but you can Venmo directly @JC-W19.
