Spencer House, Vale of Health, Hampstead (1964).

On first view a fairly unremarkable building, but the history of the site is quite interesting. Its named after the artist Sir Stanley Spencer, who used a studio in the hotel that stood on the site until it was demolished in 1962....

The thing about architectural conservation is that it’s supposed to transcend the question ‘DO WE LIKE THIS?’.

It’s meant to be about preserving characteristic exemplars of style.

Is there another large exposed aggregate panel building in Scotland? I can’t think of any.

The thread about Argyle House; “preposterously large and a potential rival to the Castle rock”
Brutalist buildings are the Marmite of architecture - passionately loved or loathed - and one in Edinburgh was much in the news yesterday when it was announced that plans had been lodged for the demolition and replacement of Argyle House. But while other news sources make much click capital out of it having briefly appeared in some Netflix police show or another, here at Threadinburgh I prefer to get down to the nitty-gritty of the how, why and what of this much critiqued building. And just what it has to do with the Lyceum Theatre, Dalgety Bay and the Water of Leith Walkway...

Ai finding it's way into Local History Facebook groups.

The member has reposted several of these ai-generated videos that must have used one original image, and then done it's usual, scrappy job of making it look like something Disney would make. This trash is eroding local history presentation.

Just to show that thus account is not dewy-eyed nostalgia.

I was six in 1975. I remember it being great, but I was a kid, sheltered from the harsh realities of life. I rather think life in Britain in 1975 was as rubbish as it is in 2025.
Ah the 1970s.

Stagflation, three day weeks, collapsing infrastructure. Civil War in Northern Ireland. In yer face racism and bigotry everywhere. Bin strikes. Strikes in general. Blackouts. Industrial decline. Wage inequality. Dog crap everywhere. And households spent 25% of their income on food.
