Exposing the power of corporate lobbying in the EU for Corporate Europe Observatory @corporateeurope.bsky.social, esp around climate, but all diatribes my own.
Not just the Financial Transaction Tax - the EU has withdrawn multiple plans to regulate tax avoidance:

🐚 misuse of shell companies
🕴️ fiddling corporate income tax
📈 on transfer pricing

Is this the inevitable outcome when we ask corporations what regulations are too "burdonesome"?

The mask is OFF 🎭 ! EU Commission President @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu admits that "simplification" actually means "deregulation" (surprise surprise - we've been saying this for a long time).

Great article from CEO explains how the EU's new plan for a "28th Regime" could undermine social and labour rights across the continent, bypassing rules in the 27 member states.

Chilling stuff 🥶

Colin Seeberger at @americanprogress.bsky.social shows how Trump's tariffs, plus his Big Beautiful Bill, are going to make 99% of Americans poorer. 👀

The German govt's new report into its energy transition shows meeting its 2030 green hydrogen target is "barely achievable".

The hydrogen lobby's response? More deregulation 🤦🏻‍♂️

Calls for a "pragmatic focus on unshackling investment long weighed down by overly complex regulation"

True to form, the US doesn't hold back in telling the EU what to do - "dismantle climate legislation if you want our fracked gas"

No evidence of the EPP snubbing the far right. The grand coalition that brought VDL to power (EPP & S&D, supported by Renew & Greens) is no longer needed by the EPP, and they'll do what they want.

EPP MEP Alexander Bernhuber spells it out in negotiations on the Forest Law. Pure Realpolitik 👇🏻

Climate change makes extreme weather more likely. Yep, we get that. But seeing the numbers is mind-blowing 🤯

🔥 It made the weather conditions behind 🇪🇸 + 🇵🇹's recent wildfires 40x more likely!

🥵 It made 🇪🇸's 10 day August heatwave 200x more likely!

And we're outta there! Hasta la vista Strasbourg 🇫🇷

Was an absolute privilege to be able to bring the voices of 🇿🇦 communities fighting #greenhydrogen into the heart of EU decision-making.

Thanks to @udobullmann.bsky.social @tillymetz.bsky.social for making it happen 🙏🏼

This is just the first step ✊🏼

Correia also said the EU was not involved in any of the projects shown in the documentary. This is untrue.

The Global Gateway might not, but the EU is one of the key funders of South Africa's Just Energy Transition Partnership (esp since the US pulled out), which covers all of them.
July 9, 2025 at 3:48 PM
2/2 Correia says that the CTIP is responding to South Africa's coal dominated energy sector (80+%).

Yet building vast quantities of renewable electricity to be used to produce green hydrogen, which is then exported, is NOT going to clean up the grid.

Predictably disappointing.

DG TRADE's Dora Correia responds to comments on the #CTIP by saying very little of substance that's not already in existing documents.

Avoids criticisms brought up by South Africa's communities or trade unionists. Says the EU is responding to a call by South Africa ("not our fault, gov").

Claudia Azevedo from the Jacques Delors think tank (who used to work at DG TRADE) comments on the ongoing #CTIP negotiations. She calls for:

- civil society + parliament involvement in negotiations
- sustainability commitments to be included
- explicit inclusion of free prior and informed consent

South Africa Trade Union Confederation COSATU's Tanya van Meelis warns against the EU-South Africa #CTIP and its push for green hydrogen leading to a new energy colonialism "it must not replicate the exploitative patterns of the past"

@groundworksa.bsky.social's Yegeshni Moodley to the European Parliament:

"Green hydrogen has been marketed as a promised panacea for all our energy transition woes.... But there are critical flaws in this hypothesis – there is no empty land in my country, and energy is never free."
July 9, 2025 at 12:52 PM
Screening finished and now the Delegation meeting on the Clean Trade & Investment Partnership #CTIP and #greenhydrogen, which will respond to concerns raised by communities in the film.

We'll be hearing from DG TRADE and Yegeshni Moodley from @groundworksa.bsky.social

🎥The first preview screening of our new documentary is now happening inside the European Parliament.

MEPs from the Delegation for South Africa are putting on a special viewing before holding a hearing on green hydrogen.
