This is a new image of comet 3I/ATLAS, showing the development of a long tail of dust and gas as the object gets closer to the Sun.

As a reminder, the "I" in 3I/ATLAS stands for "interstellar".

Because this comet formed around a different star and is OLDER THAN THE SOLAR SYSTEM

FACT THREAD on New Interstellar Object #A11pl3Z

This story unfolded pretty fast yesterday for a few reasons. The object was discovered on July 1st UTC by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS team. A #NASA funded survey at the University of Hawaii. atlas.fallingstar.com 🔭🧪

In about three hours, NASA's Parker Solar Probe will swoop just 4 million miles above the Sun at 0.064% the speed of light.

It's the first of three final dives that will bring the spacecraft closer to a star than we've ever visited.

Story by me in SciAm

If you told me 18 years ago, you not only will study astronomy but also combine your newfound passion of STEM education into a career… and after 12+ years in the field you will be awarded King Charles III Coronation Medal,

I would have laughed hard… 😅

Now I am sitting here shedding happy tears 🥲

Auroras have been on my mind lately… not only because I had an amazing opportunity to work in a rockstar Solar Terrestrial Sciences team this year but also with the insane displays that the Sun has blessed us with!

Here’s a shot taken with my iPhone of October 12 display from London, Ontario:
