Anti-genocide (can’t believe I even have to declare that)

Former public servant finding new ways to serve. Opinions are my own. Feel free to make them yours.
There is a name for this: P.E.P. It stands for Progressive Except for Palestine.

And it is insane.

When asked about his decision to confront President Trump during the joint session, Texas Congressman Al Green said he was inspired by the late Rep. John Lewis, a champion of civil disobedience. 1/7

It seems self-evident: “La vida se guarda.” (Life is to be saved). And yet, I know that it’s not. Every day we are confronted by the fire. What do we treasure? What will we save? 2/2

In 1994, Tatiana Castro Abuchaibe was crowned Miss Colombia after giving this answer to the final question.

I’m moved by her words. But what sticks with me is the immediacy of her response, how obvious the right answer was to her. 1/2

I saw the video. Have you? Have you heard that boy screaming in pain and terror? Do you need to see and hear it in order to feel something – in order to say something?

Ask yourself a simple question: if she is so right and righteous about this, why do we choose to ignore her on that? The good lord has sent us a Catholic Pope, an Episcopalian Bishop, over a thousand Black pastors and more rabbis than I can count. What more do we need? 3/3

Many are saying she reflects the essence of Christian love, fellowship and justice. But I suspect that many folks praising her today either do not know – or choose to ignore – the words she spoke 10 months ago, when she made a plea for compassion and mercy for another group of people. 2/3

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde deserves the praise she’s receiving for a sermon she delivered on Tuesday at the National Cathedral. She spoke to President Trump as he, his family and senior members of his admin sat before her. She asked for his mercy on LGBTQ people and on undocumented immigrants. 1/3

Friends, Romans, countrymen: lend me your ears. I come here to praise Carter, not to bury what he stood for and what he fought against.

I pray that, per his evangelical Christian faith, President Carter is welcomed into the kingdom of heaven. I hope he is granted as much grace in the next world as he gave all of us in this one. I trust that his eternal soul will find peace. 4/5

President Obama is absolutely right.

Jimmy Carter was a truth-teller. When he told the world 20 years ago that Israel was becoming an apartheid state, he was telling us the truth – just as his fellow Nobel laureates Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu did. 2/5

As we mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter, I’ve been moved by the many thoughtful tributes being shared on social media. 🧵

President Obama’s statement stood out to me because he included this:

It turns out that Gregory Maguire had ample reason to believe in the transfmotive power of love and justice. Check this out 👇🏾

What saves her is realizing that there is suffering and injustice all around her and that her ability to use her voice ‘for good’ makes her powerful beyond measure. In the end, she turns her misfortune into a mission and, in so doing, realizes unconditional love 💚

Gregory Maguire is the author of Wicked, the novel that inspired the musical and film. The story centers around a person who was born into trauma and marginalized by society. 1/3
