One of my favorites. His follow up - I Am a Strange Loop - is more philosophy than science but also in my top 5 favorite non-fiction books.
The one thing I remember from (partially) reading "Godel-Escher-Bach: The eternal golden braid" is that a system can't be proved from within that system. Emergent intelligence from complexity is also covered in this 1979 book.
