What a ridiculous statement.

The foundational notion of the criminal justice system is the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, which is meaningless if you don’t have a lawyer.

Lawyers aren’t allowed to decline cases just because the client is unpopular or the nature of the case:
From the commentary to Chapter 4.1-1 of the Law Society of Ontario’s Complete Rules of Professional Conduct: “[4] Right to Decline Representation - A lawyer may decline a particular representation (except when assigned as counsel by a tribunal), but that discretion should be exercised prudently, particularly if the probable result would be to make it difficult for a person to obtain legal advice or representation. Generally, a lawyer should not decline representation merely because a person seeking legal services or that person's cause is unpopular or notorious, or because powerful interests or allegations of misconduct or malfeasance are involved, or because of the lawyer's private opinion about the guilt of the accused. A lawyer declining representation should assist in obtaining the services of another licensee qualified in the particular field and able to act. When a lawyer offers assistance to a client or prospective client in finding another licensee, the assistance should be given willingly and, except where a referral fee is permitted by rule 3.6-6, without charge.”

Seems to be inconsistent with the American College of Chest Physicians’ evidence-based guidelines, which conclude that sitting in economy (rather than business class) does not increase the risk of a blood clot, even on long-haul flights …

What do these guidelines tell us? The evidence review that informed the guidelines looked at a range of risk factors for the development of DVT in long-distance travellers. These included the use of oral contraceptives, sitting in a window seat, advanced age, dehydration, alcohol intake, pregnancy and sitting in an economy seat compared to business class. The reviewers conclude that developing DVT or pulmonary embolism from a long-distance flight is generally unlikely, but that the following factors increased people's risk: • previous DVT or pulmonary embolism or known 'thrombophilic disorder' • cancer • recent surgery or trauma • immobility • advanced age • ostrogen use, including oral contraceptives • pregnancy • sitting in a window seat • obesity The finding relating to window seats was discussed the review did not find any definitive evidence to support the theory that dehydration, alcohol intake or sitting in an economy seat (compared with sitting in business class) increases the risk of DVT or pulmonary embolism during a long-distance flight. On this basis, they conclude that travelling in economy class does not increase the risk of developing a blood clot, even during long-distance travel. However, they believe that remaining immobile for long periods of time does.

The Amending Regulations and ceasing the CCR will mainly benefit older and/or wealthier Canadians. The net effect of the current system which comprises fuel charge costs and the CCR for households tends to be a net benefit for lower- and middle-income households and a net cost for higher income households. Therefore, the elimination of the fuel charge and the CCR would generally be expected to benefit wealthier Canadians who tend to use more fossil fuels, whereas lower- and middle-income households would generally be negatively impacted. For the 2024-25 fuel charge year for example, the Department of Finance (using Social Policy Simulation Database and Model, and internal calculations) estimates that roughly 85% of households making under $40,000 realized a net benefit from the fuel charge and CCR system, compared with only about 55% of households making over $250,000. While Canada previously said that the consumer carbon tax would reduce GHG emissions by 15 Mt/year by 2030, it now says that the consumer tax would only have achieved 3.3 Mt of emission reductions in 2030, and only 12.57 Mt *combined* between 2025 and 2030.
Costs The Department of Finance Canada, using ECCC's emissions data, estimates that the elimination of the fuel charge will lead to a loss of 12.57 Mt cumulative GHG emissions reductions from 2025 to 2030. This estimation of the environmental effect of the fuel charge differs from previous estimates such as the one published by the PBO in October of 2024. While the previous analysis finds that the fuel charge is responsible for a 15 Mt reduction by 2030, the current analysis finds that the fuel charge is responsible for only 3.3 Mt in 2030. It is important to note that the impact on progress towards Canada's 2030 target differs, due to changes in WCI credits bought by Québec under their cap-and-trade system.

Removal of fuel charge will increase the cost of credits under the Clean Fuel Regulation, which will result in increased costs to balance the market. Those increased costs will be passed on to consumers of gasoline and diesel in all provinces (including Quebec).
2) The elimination of the fuel charge increases demand for gasoline and diesel, which increases CFR compliance obligations while the elimination also lowers the incentive to blend hydrogen and biofuels into fossil fuels, which decreases the supply of CFR credits. CFR credit prices increase to balance the market with increased costs being passed on to consumers of gasoline and diesel in all jurisdictions (including Quebec). In addition, higher CFR credit prices induce some additional emissions reductions across sectors that create CFR credits.

Which is why my subscription won't be getting renewed this year.
