This sandwich would go great with a beer and a copy of Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential (I bet you could snag one of those at a bookstore on #6thAve)

Introduce yourself with what almost killed you:

Hi! I'm a big rig that decided to pass on a hill without looking in the mirrors & drove a car off the road but maybe never even noticed that I did that.
Introduce yourself with what almost killed you:

Hi! I'm "got hit by a car going 45mph when I was walking to school when I was 14".
Hi, I'm the center of a borderline EF-4 tornado. 🤷

Finished my first read of 2026 (started at least two weeks ago, I think - so also my last read of 2025):

John Le Carré's novel, A Perfect Spy.

Tour de force of a novel - I really loved it. I'll be thinking about parts of this book for a while.

I loved "I Who Have Never Known Men" by Belgian author Jacqueline Harpman, translated by Roz Schwartz.

Originally published in French as "Moi qui n'a pas connu les hommes," this book swept me away into a strange lonely world unlike any other.

Loved it from the 1st paragraph. #booksky
What was the best book you've read this year? (Any genre.)

Another round of favorite books I sold in 2025:

Some beautiful box sets came through the shop this year, including this gorgeous @foliosociety.bsky.social edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Design in every detail!

Here are some of my favorite books sold in 2025:

A beautiful & unusual Modern Library edition of Flowering Judas by Katherine Anne Porter from the 1960s.

Couldn't find any other editions w/this dust jacket, which is maybe why this volume sold w/in a day.

I gave our teen @sofiaajram.bsky.social's Coup de Grace for xmas bc it reminded me of a game they shared w/me (the horror walking sim Exit 8).

Coup de Grace was a Shirley Jackson award nominee & We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a shared favorite in our house
Seriously: teenagers feel ambivalent about being given books that are supposed to be "good" for them, right when they're trying to establish their own tastes.

It may never have occurred to them before that giving someone a book is *an invitation* to meet them in another time and place.

(1/2)
I respect people who give books. Just let the young folk know that what you're doing isn't telling them what to like - it's asking them to share an experience with you.

Most kids don't realize that the second most important thing about reading is having books in common with other people 📚❤️

I really loved this book.

If I haven't given my copy away (I might have), I would love to reread it.

Poetic, ordinary, and heartfelt.

Selling on a platform like eBay (or others), I sometimes think of the platforms like a landlord...

& definitely my landlord is installing AI all over whether I like it or not.

One of my weekend orders was a copy of @karenhao.bsky.social's Empire of AI.

It heads off to the customer with tomorrow's post - and I'm getting in line for it at the library because I want to read this one too.

reading Robin Wall Kimmerer's beautiful writing can be so calming it's almost painful. thinking about that today in this 1st entry in my reading journal, as rain continues to fall & fall & fall in the PNW.

Today's reason I love my public library:

I'm listening to Flynn Berry's Northern Spy while waiting to pick up a friend whose train is delayed. Downloaded on the @libbyapp.com thanks to Tacoma Public Library!

I finished @harikunzru.bsky.social's Blue Ruin.

Appreciated reading a novel (partially) set during the pandemic shutdown. I want to engage w/more art that directly references that time. There's so much mandatory forgetting in our culture.

Anyone have suggestions of other books?

My best advice is just to stick with it! I remember having similar struggles in The 5th Season, but making it through Book 1 & then having the series blow my mind and heart open in the 2nd & 3rd books in a way that made the formal choices in Book 1 come into context. It's worth it!

Currently reading The 5th Season by N.K. Jemisin but there is something I’m struggling with.

1/3 of the story is written in 2nd person - essentially placing you, the reader, in the story which I find really hard to digest and engage with. Any tips on how to approach this type of reading?

In the prologue to Guinea: Masks, Music, and Minerals, the author describes Guinea as a place where "conspiracy" explains the inexplicable ("A car accident, a plane crash...even bad weather") bc for 26 years the president "eliminated his opponents by declaring them part of conspiracies."
