@katieprout.bsky.social wrote this vitally important piece this week about ICE attacks on the unhoused in Chicago for @chicagoreader.com.
new: at least 26 unhoused chicagoans have been abducted since the start of "operation midway blitz."

the full scope of people disappeared is likely much larger but is obscured by heavy criminalization, social stigma, and fewer eyes and phones around to bear witness.

Am very sorry to learn Steve was tackled and detained for doing his job. These actions are an attempt to punish free speech and dissent, which is fundamentally at odds with the role of a free and independent press in a democracy.
Steve is fine/uninjured. Some neck pain from being tackled.

His biggest concern while in custody was what was happening to people outside the facility since he couldn't hear any of the munitions from inside.

In typical Steve fashion, he also made a number of new friends while detained.
UPDATE: At 1:27 a.m. on Sept. 28, Unraveled Press reports that co-founder Steve Held has been released.

Part of the reason that 40 Alders called for a real extreme weather plan last year is that the 250 is mostly for show. Read OEMC’s map closely and you’ll find that tomorrow morning only 40 city buildings relabeled as “cooling centers” will be open, most of which are police station lobbies.

Even as we celebrate the arrival of spring, we must mourn the preventable cost of the winter. According to Cook County, 12 people died of accidental cold exposure this winter, with another 25 having died where the cold was implicated as secondary cause. As Loren Taylor writes, we can do better.

Am working with a 78 y/o unsheltered woman who uses a walker. She and her carer, also homeless, have been waiting and living on cold Chicago streets for months to be sheltered together. For some reason, they can't be sheltered together in Chicago. www.wane.com/top-stories/...

Am thinking of all the unsheltered people I have known and met who could be alive today if we had an Overdose Prevention Site in the area. I'm also thinking of a couple of people who have been successful in managing their recovery from SUD and need HOUSING to get back up on their feet.
A state board Thursday approved up to $18 million in funding for controversial “overdose prevention sites” that would allow people to use drugs in a public space where clinicians could make sure they’re safe.

The sites, where people could safely use drugs in a public space, might require accompanying legislation to keep users and clinicians from getting arrested under existing state drug laws.

Today, 39th Ward Neighbors United came out to support Gompers Park encampment residents thru freezing weather. Because we lack warming buses & 24/7 warming centers they distributed 24hr bus cards for folks to stay warm. Check out the resident Gompers Park pond heron.
