You’d think the obvious conflict of interest would rule out almost all of them, and yet.

I feel your pain. When we moved last year I took quite a few to street libraries. Then I donated 13 boxes of architectural books (the vast majority of my collection) to Lifeline. I’m not sure if they have collection centres up your way. It still hurts when I think about parting with my books.

Exactly this. Far too many unemployed folks I've helped have been more intelligent and capable than they're given credit for.

A broken system, and circumstance, have been the major factors keeping them there.

A different (socio-economic) background, and their stories would be radically different.

Also (I could rant about this for hours), just knowing you have a safe place to fall should you fail sees you more likely to take more risks.
