As befitting a magnum opus, there's the DNA of other Kurosawa movies in Ran. The director called the previous Kagemusha a dress rehearsal for this one and it shows, down to the main role being played by Tatsuya Nakadai who should be mentioned in the same breath as Mifune as Kurosawa's great actors.

Film: Ran (1985)

I'm ready to call this the best Kurosawa film ever. This is why rewatches are so important. I remember liking the movie before but this time I was absolutely blown away by it. This is the pinnacle of filmmaking. The definition of a masterpiece. Hoooly shit.

As I get older, I'm finding more appreciation for that period. Still will never forgive them for destroying so many castles, though.

That being said, it does hurt that he's no longer with us but I'm trying to find the strength to focus on his legacy. He left behind a HUGE chunk of Japanese cinema that will live on forever. When seriously discussing Japanese films for the next 100 years, Nakadai's name WILL come up.
