There’s a good paper here on the work that Greater Manchester have been doing on this with practical steps other local authorities could take to quickly and cheaply reduce wait times

Think it’s because there’s going to be a signalised pedestrian crossing there, so presumably to minimise the crossing distance for pedestrians?
