A recent report showed that the destruction of just one USAID program, the anti-AIDS PEPFAR initiative, would lead to the deaths of one million people *every year* www.vox.com/future-perfe...

yea this is like saying socialists endorse fascism because mussolini exists imo. both EA's stated values and the actions of 90% of its members are for PEPFAR existing. to whatever extent luke was an EA and is acting to hurt PEPFAR, it's because he changed his mind or is ""following orders""

Discovering fascinating parallels between MAGA conspiracies about the left/liberals & Bluesky conspiracies about EA

MAGAs, for example, have made outlandish claims about leftists/liberals doing "after birth abortions"

Similarly, this person thinks EAs made wooly mouse — lmao what??

The U.S. foreign aid freeze has left many without access to critical, life-saving programs. The Life You Can Save, in partnership with Founders Pledge, has created the Rapid Response Fund to help close the gap. (1/2)

It's pretty popular to hate on EA right now but this is just incoherent. I don't know why they're making musk out to be some poster boy for EA but he's not. Many/most EA's care deeply about minimizing the effects of disease & similar causes
i think "an effective altruist is personally denying twenty million people their HIV medications despite a court order telling him to send the money" is a pretty good summary of effective altruism as a real world philosophy

Epistemically, this is identical to "they are eating the cats."

Effective altruists are so committed to PEPFAR that they wrote a 400-page report on it & are organizing a donation fund for those affected by USAID cuts.

But who cares about the truth when lying & cheap dunks are so much fun?

What is Anthropic doing that others aren't?

It seems that we can squeeze more out of models w/o inference time compute.

Any guesses how?

My experience w marijuana tells me that the distribution is bimodal.

You either have the "right" brain chemistry & conscientious/aversion to addiction that you'll do it a healthy amount, like once or twice a month, and you'll really enjoy it and experience ~0 negative outcomes.

(3) makes so much sense!
This creates a trilemma: (1) deny AlphaFold produces scientific knowledge, or (2) accept that predictions can be scientific knowledge when the principles/patterns from which they are derived are not, or (3) accept that scientific knowledge can be strongly opaque. (3/5)

Hello @kyleflaw.bsky.social — how does the EA feed work? Unsure if it's curated because I noticed a) surface level commentary b) traditional political noise in it
