A little add on to this: I'm 27 and have been slowly rewatching 90s or older classics as the mood struck. A cousin who's less than 5 years younger than me told me, no I can't buy what happens on Buffy bc the special effects look cringe. What has happened to imagination?
This is a great thread about something I’ve thought about a lot with regard to various “universes” - the magic of just leaving something unexplained and let the audience work out what it means. I miss that. Especially with Star Wars.
The reason is this: the movie is incredibly, richly *suggestive*. It gestures at all kinds of things that it does not show or explain to you. In fact, virtually every line is like this. What are power converters? What is the Kessel Run? What was Han Solo's history with Jabba?
