I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

And let's also not forget that these illegal actions have direct, harmful consequences for actual people. New moms won't get help feeding their infants. Small businesses won't make payroll. People could lose their jobs, their homes.

There is simply no plausible argument that the president has the constitutional authority to refuse to spend appropriated funds because he doesn’t like how the money is being spent.

I'm a former OMB official and this is absolutely true.

oh yeah they're quite rare and have been for a long time, even 10+ years ago when I was deep in CO politics usually a handwritten letter to the district office got shown directly to the elected because it was such a novelty! most of what they get are email form letters and calls

call your assemblymember and let them know you want a public statement immediately stating that the great state of California does not respond to blackmail, but we will be perfectly willing to stop subsidizing red states with our taxes & agriculture if the President wants us to stand on our own
