(complicated by the fact that some services like WhatsApp and FB have both, but I feel like they don't emphasize online status and buddy list as much as they could. online status as artifact of desktop and/or dialup era)

as opposed to "event handler" where you're building your application brick by brick up from scratch, and you need to set up handlers for every single event to implement the behavior you want

"event listener" implies a different purpose for the whole thing: it suggests that the browser usually does most of the correct behavior out of the box (submit forms, click links, whatever), and your listener is just tagging along, sometimes doing a bit of extra work

btw, I learned today that you can crop a JPEG without decompressing & recompressing, but (basically) only if the cut lines are aligned to 16x16 blocks
