Did you know Brussels actually consists of 19 "cities" (and 19 mayors)?! Check this voronoi diagram based on distance to the nearest city hall.

A complicated one to map, if you want to compare with the actual borders...

Fun fact: the highest point of Brussels is not at Altitude 100 (named like that because it's at a 100m elevation) but somewhere in the Sonian Forest.

⚠️ When “technology will save us” becomes a climate risk!

A new paper from great colleagues takes a careful look at techno-optimism — the belief that technology will largely solve climate change — and what it means for real-world climate action.

Important piece on how we got here.

Brownstone raised millions to undermine COVID prevention policies.

Now at least 8 people with ties to Brownstone hold senior positions at federal health agencies, where they are restricting vaccines and cutting science funding.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Nearly every panel I spoke on this year ended with the same question: "What gives you hope?"

My friends, that question expired years ago. (If you need receipts, my book Saving Us is literally a 300-page answer.)

The real question is: How are you PRACTICING hope?

Because Greta is right ..

Template to challenge sustainability budget cuts at city-level (or other level fwiw).

I feel like many of us should saying this to our elected representatives right now (around the disbandment of ADEME in France), or after upcoming elections like the mayoral ones in France in March 26.

“I’m concerned this is the kind of budget we ultimately can’t afford. It may end up being most expensive budget we’ve ever seen.

A massive 14% drop in departments that shape our livability and quality of life is much too big, and will likely cost more than it will save.” #VancouversBudget

Worth a read. Canada's financescape really has lost the plot and forgotten that profits should serve people and not vice versa. It's not 1980. We know the invisible hand of the free market left unchecked does nothing but choke us and in our world climate change preparedness is an essential service.

VANCOUVER: “Over 60!businesses have signed an open letter to council, asking the city not to make a controversial budget cut to the Department of Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability.”

See my comments to Council today in the thread below. This budget won’t save money. It’ll cost FAR too much.

Organised gangs are involved in waste crime across the country, costing the taxpayer £1bn/year.
They can make £2,500 for each lorry-load of waste dumped.
Evidence suggests 117 gangs are involved; 97% of them are also engaged in other criminality, but the crime isn't deemed a priority by the police.

Generative AI causes so many demonstrable harms, from counseling kids into suicide, stealing creative work and destroying the market for it, perverting education, and this predictable horror. Any other product like this would be regulated into the smallest possible box by a responsible society.
This is one of the worst, most horrifying exposures we have ever seen. It is hard to overstate how bad the things that people are using tools like for are, and it's insane to pretend like these tools are anything other than nonconsensual porn machines
