Another engaged evening of discussion between residents and officials on the framework plan for North Blackpool and Kilbarry.

This evening the topic of discussion was transport. It follows a meeting already on housing. The final evening will be on nature and amenities.

Privileged to deputise for the Lord Mayor at this afternoon's conference in UCC on the New European Bauhaus, where I took part in a panel discussion.

This is a European programme of projects to trace the route to sustainable design and culture, involving cities, communities, schools and more.

Privileged to welcome the organising committee of the ISEE DeGrowth International Conference at City Hall yesterday on behalf of the Lord Mayor.

The conference will be held in Cork in 2027. I met with European and local organisers from Feasta, Cork Environmental Forum, Fáilte Ireland and more! 👏👏

Thanks to everyone who attended yesterday's awareness meeting in Glanmire on the soon-to-be-proposed interchange at Tivoli.

Specific concerns raised were about how the plan integrates with city ambitions for active and sustainable transport and that no actual housing will accompany the proposal.

Grateful to colleagues across parties on Cork City Council standing behind our county colleagues in their submission on the proposed incinerator at Ringaskiddy.

Cork Harbour is a shared resource between the two local authorities. Air pollution doesn't stop at the boundary between city and county.

Privileged to deputise for the Lord Mayor at today's International Men's Day cycle from Shandon to Tramore Valley Park.

In particular, I wanted to highlight the role men have played in campaigns for dedicated cycle infrastructure, ensuring cycling is inclusive and safe for all. 👏👏

Newly re-imagined city centre park yesterday. More permeability than I expected and many of the trees more visible.

In particular, I'm loving the access to the city walls and miniature amphitheatre. Some small works left to do including the restoration of the gates, but these will come.

Good to meet colleagues from across the country at yesterday's national conference for local authority Traveller accommodation committees.

Here in Cork, we continue to experience issues with maintenance and delivery of our ambition to transform the conditions of many Travellers in the city.

The only chart that matters when it comes to housing —

Between 2019 and Q2 2025, planning permission for 329,637 units granted, but only 213,790 started.

There’s no issue with zoning, no issue with planning. They are just not being built — except 2024, then the new government crashed that.

Massively engaged discussion yesterday (after a very heated start) on the Blackpool North framework plan.

A lesson in how "objection" is overplayed in the narrative. Here's a community embracing development — coming with lessons learned from experience and strong alternatives for specific sites.

Great to catch up with Green Party chair and leader, Janet Horner and Roderic O'Gorman, at the Cork Greens AGM last night in Blackpool.

New faces and a fresh energy evident in discussion about where our focus should be and working across parties for the common good. 🌻 👏👏

For context: Here is what councillors were expecting (circled in red) vs what is being put forward.

The proposed plans are not being brought forward by Cork City Council or Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the two roads authorities — but by the Port of Cork as a private application.

Standing room only at a public meeting in Ringaskiddy this evening. The community gathers again to oppose an incinerator in the village.

The fourth time in 25 years.

The less reported side of planning observations and judicial review — when an applicant hopes to wear the system down.

An important demonstration of hope and welcome at Grand Parade this afternoon — especially after last night's cowardly attack in Drogheda.

Thank you to the Lord Mayor, Fergal Dennehy, for representing the city so passionately, Laura Harmon for organising and everyone who spoke, sang and danced. 👏👏

I inquired with officials about these mysterious markings appearing across the ward.

Not a cosmic code — "almost certainly" surveyor's marking for BusConnects.

A good sign. 🥳

Enormous privilege to deputise for the Lord Mayor at the Age Friendly Ireland awards last night — and to come away with an award for the best environmental project.

Cork City Council's EnergyCloud pilot enables older people to get free hot water generated from excess renewable energy. 👏👏

Earlier this week, I had the privilege to watch the last #Áras25 debate in the company of Labour Youth, along with (some more elder!) colleagues in the Greens, Labour and SocDems.

🗳️ Tomorrow, go and vote! No need to tell me who you're voting for. These guys gave me new confidence, the future's OK.

Deadline closes in a short time for submission on the River Bride (Blackpool) Drainage Scheme.

Here's my submission, outlining the environmental, social and urban planning impacts of the project — that won't benefit households and businesses affected in Blackpool.

Grateful for the cross-party support at today's launch of World Vacant Homes Day outside Leinster House in Dublin.

The greenest home is the one that's already built. Vacancy and dereliction blight communities across our cities, towns and rural areas.
October 8, 2025 at 6:19 PM
An early start this morning — taking the train to Dublin with special cargo for the launch of World Vacant Homes Day.

I'll be joined on the other end by Frank O'Connor and Jude Sherry, who will be special guests at the launch outside Leinster House.

Scenes from emergency demonstrations in Cork and Dublin this week in solidarity with Sumud flotilla members taken by Israel.

Reports of abuses today give an insight into the operation of the Israeli regime, the nature of its occupation of Palestine, and its genocide in Gaza.

Strong turnout on a blustery afternoon in Cork city centre for the Raise the Roof demonstration this afternoon. 👏👏

My Green Party colleague, Dan Boyle, introduced speakers at the Emmet Place meeting point — and spoke about how every step being taken by this government is making the situation worse.

Straight talking — and a shocking response from the Minister — at today's Love 30 demonstration at Leinster House.

Same message from councillors, regardless of party — from Cork, Dublin, Galway and Sligo — make 30km/h the default, and we'll apply special limits to the exceptions in urban areas.
