Radar data often includes information on aerial insect activity, which is often discarded, despite the fact that we don't know enough about movement and abundance of insects in the troposphere.📡 🐝 Our scientists are changing that. Very innovative use of radars in important & multidisciplinary work
🧪
UK weather radar is now being used to monitor trillions of insects in the sky every day – offering a new, cost-effective way to track biodiversity at scale.

Read more about why it matters and what the results are 👉

An important article & research paper on environmental justice, indoor air quality and how it's unequal & inaccessible. eg if you aren't a homeowner. It highlights, among else, that work on indoor air quality should be done in a wider social & historical context, that contributes to the inequality.
Poor indoor air quality is linked to serious health problems, and the burden of these impacts is not evenly shared.

NCAS researcher, Dr Amber Yeoman, shares how Awaab’s Law could transform indoor air quality in UK homes:

Who controls the air we breathe at home? Awaab’s law and the limits of individual actions
The ability to improve air quality in your home depends less on personal behaviour and more on who owns the building.

"Whether" for me. Between "whether", "wherever", "whenever" & "weather", I either write the wrong one, or make a weird combo of these words. And even if I got it right, I would still doubt myself endlessly.

PS: while writing this, I first wrote "whether" as "whever", so there we go...
my most behated English word is "reciprocated", always had to look up its spelling

And I think this is a real problem. Presenting information in a "neutral" way that downplays/minimizes the conflicting ethical/moral dilemmas can make people less likely to respond to situations involving suffering; especially when it involves something even worse: forced, indiscriminate suffering 🧵
4. When you study these models by asking questions to test whether they are neutral, my question is this: does being neutral make the model more moral or ethical? What is the value of a model that responds neutrally to abuses or discrimination? n/n

True and there are several problems about this that several of us pointed out when we were working on these systems. Some are, these systems make up info even when summarizing, that it is statistically impossible to erase this & that the owner can train the info to tune it to its own bias... 1/n 🧵

I just can't catch a break. Last night, the police woke me up because two dudes tried stealing my motorcycle. They didn't succeed because: 1. A neighbour saw them and called the police; 2. The battery was dead, so they couldn't start it. Still, they rolled it away and smashed the front up 🥲

I'm glad to read this. About time. Also I don't understand why he was made FRS in the first place. He's not a scientist and he's not an engineer. He's a business leader who pontificates wildly on scientific subjects in which he knows next to nothing and his DOGE has actively damaged US science. 🔭🧪
