They have been missing from our little garden for a few years but in 2021 they used to arrive mob-handed at the feeder a few yards from the busy road undeterred by the traffic.

These horses are slow, so I am claiming them for the TV thing. I’ve never seen the show but I’ve read the books. The willow sculptures are “grazing” near a National Trust café. *Details in alt text
Slow Horses
Two willow horse sculptures stand in fallen autumn leaves beneath trees at the Coach House café at Sheffield Park Gardens, Sussex. They are the work of Emma Parkin, based in Belper, Derbyshire but who was born in East Sussex. The artist specialises in willow sculpture, where she adopts an illustrative style that showcases the movement of each animal she studies. Due to the large scale, it can take several months to create a single sculpture. The sculptures are sustainable; made from a mixture of brown and white willow which will slowly degrade over time. They also provide a great habitat for insects. The work was commissioned to celebrate the history of the café building, once the home for 15 horses, a riding school, four double coach houses and seven bedrooms for grooms and coachmen in the 19th century.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #least - the bird in your camera roll that you have the least captures of. For me it is probably the Greater Flamingos we saw in Andalusia a few years back. OK, there are plenty here but all in one shot. I can’t find any others showing the birds clearly.

He’s got a red breast but that pot our local garden assistant Robin is perched upon while I dig out some soil, possibly containing grubs and worms, is blue, so I’m claiming it.

Sometimes I spend too much time scrolling, watching the world go to Hell in a turbo-charged handcart and not taking time out. Today I sat in the front garden and emptied a large flower pot accompanied by an inquisitive Robin and watched a rider go past on a horse. The sun shone.

The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is a waterbird, breeding mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. It is a large bird with black plumage and a red bill. This one is pictured swimming in one of the small ponds at Chartwell, in Kent, the former home of wartime leader Winston Churchill. The pond’s waters, reflecting greenery and some blue skies, are rippled as the swan swims towards the side.

I don’t have many Robin pictures so I haven’t contributed to Rob’s #HolidayRobin thus far but this morning I was emptying flower pots ready to plant next Spring’s tulips and look who showed up to help.

A persistent and ever-present Robin who perched on the sides of the plant pots as I emptied them of last year’s soil and bulbs in preparation for the Spring tulip planting. There were plenty of grubs and worms on offer. These small birds are quite fearless in human company and this one was within a couple of feet as I worked.
