Guten Morgen!

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️
Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Predictive text models do not ever "answer your question"

They predict what an answer to your question would probably look like.

Which is very, very, very different
I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that
Unfortunately, it repeatedly offers incorrect answers for straightforward math questions. 🧪

How long would your commute take in 1680? Mine would be about a day and a half.

@camunicampop.bsky.social has a brilliant tool for calculating travel times in Roman, 1680, 1830, 1911 and 2024. 🗃️

Using AI to write science explainers is bad for SO MANY REASONS relating to accuracy and content theft but also because effective science communication is not about just arranging information on a page, but allowing the science to create a connection between people, the basis of which is trust
