But their victory is not our victory. Indeed their victory is in spite of our utter failure to help them in their hour of need. Their celebrations cannot rightly be ours, for we discarded them. We have made the decision to discard Syria over and over again ever since Obama's ignored red lines.

As we celebrate the end of the Assad regime - one of the worst dictatorships still intact anywhere in the world - it must chide us Americans that we did so little to bring this end about. The dream of the Syrian people is our dream, the dream of all mankind. Peace, safety, freedom.

The Syrian people will have a lot of work to do, and things could still go really sideways. But it is hard not to see the ousting of Assad as a victory for them - a glimmer of hope for their future in a free and safe country. For peace, for a country to raise their children in.
