I kind of find soatok's article on this convincing as an explanation of why it heuristically sucks. (I genuinely don't give a shit about invisible salamanders, but I think he makes a good case that the popular implementations here are terrible.)

(Yes I have an actual threat model that excludes Signal as a primary long-term choice for me.)

I'm not totally averse to building it myself -- I know some of the theory -- but I'm not a cryptographer so you'd be putting your faith in my ability to implement a thing.

(I've thought a lot about my threat model and the short of it is that I want E2EE, but can't get E2EE group chat in a first party sense without rolling my own or giving up on properties I care about more.)
