A familiar red and white temporary NO PARKING easel is on a sidewalk by the curb of a leaf-strewn city street. A copy of the permit from Seattle Department of Transportation has been affixed to the sign obscuring the P-A-R, effectively changing the message to NO KING.

Perfect Summer 3
The bulk of the frame is taken up by a large number of orange petunias in a hanging basket. Backlit from the sun, they are luminescent. Behind it, out of focus, are a green lawn with a couple of green shrubs and a shimmering lake. Beyond that is the slope of a low mountain rising to the right of the frame.

A male Rufous Hummingbird perches on the tip of a rotted, limbless, and sun-bleached tree trunk. He is overall a burnt orange color, his gorget (which word, until a few years ago, I thought was pronounced with a hard g, like gorgon, but it is not, no, it is not) in the photo looks a pretty medium-dark brown but is, in fact, a brilliant copper-orange. (If only he would turn toward the sun. Sigh.) Something about the feathers on the bird's forehead makes it appear that his brow is furrowed. The eye seems to have a steely glint, although this could just be the effect of a highlight from the sun showing toward the upper back of its beady, little, black, birdy eye.

From many years ago.
1) A Tree Swallow perches atop the support pole of a nesting box. The swallow is yelling at a second Tree Swallow flying toward the box with a small, multiply branched bit of twiggy something for nesting material in its bill. 2) Swallow 2 is now preparing for a landing on the roof of the nesting box. Swallow 1 is still yelling at it. 3) Swallow 2, now safely landed, still holding twiggy bit, looks outward. Swallow 1 has stopped yelling but looks away, refusing to acknowledge the twig supplier. 4) Swallow 1, still atop the support pole, now faces downward, giving Swallow 2 THAT LOOK, while Swallow 2 stares directly at the camera, thinking "WTF".

Perfect Summer 1
On a gated service road lined with tall evergreens, by a lake (out of view), a heavily forested mountainside in the distance, a barefoot man in dad-shorts, hoodie, and ball cap walks away carrying a fishing rod and tackle box, followed by a dog. Behind him a child squats in the road, (one shoe on, the other off), while an woman in floppy sun hat and sweater studiously holds a fishing rod on the lakeshore.

vault toilets: an explainer
A 8 1/2" x 11" computer printed notice stapled to a roadside restroom wall reads: "NOTICE! Lid must be kept down while not in use to abate odors as much as possible. Thank you" On the thin plastic sheet protecting the notice, someone has written in Sharpie: "<frownie face> Poopy smell will go out thru hole in roof if potty lid is closed <smiley face>"

Perfect Summer 2
A narrow trail sharply curves and vanishes in an impossibly emerald green temperate forest setting. The ground on either side of the trail is covered with moss, sword fern, and vanilla leaf. Vine maples form a low canopy overhead, practically glowing in the filtered sunlight.

A rustic, carved and painted wood chickadee sits on a flat surface (yes, it sits - its little wire legs hang over the edge) in a dark room. In a shaft of sunlight on the wall behind the chickadee, the shadow of a roughly humanoid shape looms menacingly.
