On July 16, 1945, the first nuclear weapon was detonated. The code name for the test was Trinity.

Today, more than 12,300 nuclear weapons exist, & peer reviewed research shows that a nuclear exchange of less than 3% of that could lead to the deaths of billions.

No one wins a nuclear war.

That figure excludes recent overruns in the Sentinel program

Davis Winkie reports on rising costs and policy tensions in USA TODAY

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office's estimate does not include recently discovered cost overruns in the Sentinel missile project.

I've written a comprehensive report on plutonium pit production - including a critical look at the history, the risks and costs, and the science of Pu aging. Short story: new pits are unnecessary, dangerous, and expensive and alternatives provide a safer future. Please read and circulate! #NukeSky

This week, Joseph Nye, a legend in international relations scholarship, passed away at age 88. Here is his final commentary on how the US's recent actions may increase nuclear proliferation and he pushes back against arguments that increased proliferation could be stabilizing.

Any resumption of full-scale nuclear tests would be technically unnecessary and geopolitically disastrous. The latest from my colleague, Jennifer Knox, @ucs.org explains how scientists helped usher in the Partial Test Ban and reminds us that we can do it again, and do even better.
How Science and Advocacy Ended Dangerous Nuclear Testing in the United States
Amid calls for a resumption of nuclear weapons testing, it is time for scientists and activists to again unite in opposition to this unnecessary risk.
