One of my favourite trees didn’t survive the Christmas gales. What surprised me was the main reason it snapped rather than uprooted was the hollowness of its trunk. None of this was visible on the outside of a healthy tree. Disease? Woodpeckers?

My co-authors (Gabe Hrynick and Amy Fox) and I found that after the arrival of maize c. 1,000 years ago, houses became larger and more varied in shape in New England, but stayed the same in the Canadian maritimes where there was no maize. 🧪🏺
