every so often i need to remember that "ConcernedApe" is responsible for a hit videogame and not, like, blockchain JPEGs

There are two different things an audience wants from your story: 1) they want your protagonist to get what they want or, in some cases, deserve. 2) they want to FEEL. Sometimes those are one and the same. But sometimes, like in E.T., TITANIC, and many horror movies, they are not.
