He likes tariffs because he can impose or remove them unilaterally, making them perfect for extracting payoffs from countries, corporations, or anybody willing to pay the grift to be either exempted, or have them placed on competitors. I’m astonished that this isn't pointed out more often.

Generally agree with George here, with this clarification.

The economy is at risk *because our freedoms and the rule of law are at risk.
That said, the Dems need to find a way to express that they understand, and impress upon others, the moment we are in, when far more than the economy (you know, like our freedoms, and the rule of law) are at stake.
