We need energy, transport, and housing for modern life, but animal products are different; we don't need them for survival or health. The world's leading health authorities confirm that balanced plant-based diets are associated with significant health benefits. 2. We can start changing it today. Unlike massive, slow-to-change infrastructure projects, transitioning our diets is something we can do right now. While most of us can't directly vote on major climate policies or influence the oil industry, our food choices are a powerful lever we all control. 3. It harms the planet in countless ways. Beyond CO, and methane emissions, animal farming is the world's leading cause of soil degradation and biodiversity loss, the most serious threat to the oceans, the largest emitter of ammonia and nitrous oxide, one of the largest users of freshwater, the largest user of land, and the single biggest driver of rainforest destruction. That's still not all. Animal agriculture is also the largest system of organized violence in history, a leading driver of world hunger, the world's leading cause of antibiotic resistance, and the single most risky human activity for pandemics. It would be even cuter if farmers didn't forcibly impregnate them, mutilate them without anesthesia, breed them for unnaturally high milk yields, separate mothers from their newborns, and send “unproductive” animals to the slaughterhouse after a fraction of their natural lifespan.
