The money being thrown around for AI is so huge that numbers have lost all meaning. But @shiraovide.bsky.social offers one way to put it in context: The amount Big Tech has spent on AI data centers in just the past year could fund SNAP benefits for four years. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
Analysis | The AI spending frenzy is so huge that it makes no sense
Big companies could fund four years’ worth of SNAP benefits from what they’re spending on AI. It may not be a bubble but the numbers in AI are bonkers.

Before her (too early) death, the amazing Sharon Begley wrote this piece on double helix co-discoverer James Watson and the racist and sexist pronouncements he seemed to revel in making in later life. Fascinating read about a troubling individual.

I read The Double Helix as an undergraduate. I was a science major at a women’s college taking molecular biology. Our professor taught us that Watson & Crick screwed Rosalind Franklin over.

So I read the book to learn more. I’ll never forget how reading this passage made me feel.
