I have no family on the coast, but my grandad died sitting in his caravan at Punakaiki after climbing the rocks, on their retirement holiday. We come that way every couple of years to pay our respects.

I have, but a few years ago.
I was lucky enough to drive tour coaches for 5 years so have covered the country a hundred times from The Cape to Bluff.
Except Waiuta of course 🤣🤷

Been to Blackball, Ikamatua and Reefton but never even heard of Waiuta. I feel a road trip coming on.

In the early 80's some bikie gangsters were partying there and one of them sunk to the bottom. He was never recovered. We still went swimming 🤷
Also, the Yanks had a camp in Warkworth during WWll. After the war all the jeeps and munitions etc went into the hole. Still be down there i guess. Rusting

So many people died in the swimming hole. Dive in, hit the rocks and then sink 150 feet to the bottom.
Couple of my school chums never made it out of their teens. Glug glug.

Im pretty sure i remember a number of tv shows being filmed there over years.
When i was a kid (long before safety standards) it was open slather. You could climb all over and through it.
Now its fragile & dangerous so theyve fenced most of the tall crumbly structures off. Doesnt stop people tho
