‘The intertwining of religion and ethnicity’ is how most religions work. It’s not until the 18th century or so that (exclusively) Christians started to see religion as a module unconnected to culture and that can be removed without changing anything. You think this way because you are post-Christian

I mean, I can’t stand these folks, and he’s inventing a demand that doesn’t exist. But Catholics are supposed to fast* on Fridays (they’re supposed to not use birth control, either) and if this guy is a TradCath he oughtn’t be having a festive meal that night, it’s true.

No, every religion fasts differently. Western christians have never done fasting as abstention from all food and drink. Fridays used to be no meat or fowl, no wine, maybe no sugar? When I was a kid public school cafeterias always had a fish option for lunch on Fridays.
